What Are the Causes of Hair Damage & Hair Loss?

As it happens with many ailments, there is more than one cause affecting overall hair health and growth. Healthy and thick hair depends on hair follicles being strong and well-nourished. Things like a saturated fat-rich diet lacking essential minerals and vitamins can really have an impact.

Telogen effluvium, a form of temporary hair loss usually followed by intense periods of stress, is the living proof of a clear link between hair loss and emotional health.

Factors like dryness — sometimes due to weather — and aggressive hair care regimens involving the use of dye, curling irons or harmful chemicals are another culprit.

Genetic predisposition also plays a role, as hair loss can sometimes run in the family.

Finally, over-washing can really get in the way of healthy hair growth. Ideally, you should limit your shampoos to twice a week and only use natural non-irritant products. For severely dry hair, dermatologists recommend sticking to a once-a-week regimen.
