What to Consider When Using Yoga for Recovery

Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health suggests three things when you’re exploring yoga for addiction recovery. They also apply to those helping others through the condition. Here they are:

1. Don’t go on the journey alone

It is best to do your recovery therapy with a group and a trained professional. That way, you’ll get support and motivation from others. Find a recovery clinic or addiction support group that incorporates holistic practices, like yoga, for recovery.

2. Learn to ride the wave

That statement is figurative but, by all means, go surfing if that’s your thing. Mindfulness meditation will help you with this. You must practice being aware of when your urge starts and learn to be with it without acting on it. However, you need to be aware enough to know when you can ride the wave and when the urge is too intense and you need help. That’s wisdom.

3. Find a yoga sequence you enjoy and do it steadfastly

As you practice yoga, you’ll notice certain asanas that resonate with you. Practice those as your routine and aim to perfect your form. Studies have shown that the brain releases the neurotransmitter GABA when you consume alcohol. Your body releases the same neurotransmitter when you do yoga. So, when next you feel the urge to drink, reach for your mat instead and get the same relaxing feeling.

In the following pages, we will cover nine yoga poses to help with addiction recovery.
