While many of us associate stress with the mind, it can play a large role in the aches, pains and stiffness we feel in the body. Stress is actually a response of the body to a threatening situation. Whether this threat is real or perceived, a chemical reaction occurs in the body in order to prevent any injuries. This response is known as the “fight-or-flight” or stress response. During the stress response your “heart rate increases, breathing quickens” and blood pressure rises to name a few. In short, the body is preparing to protect itself.

This protective measure however, can cause a lot of discomfort and pain in the body. When the stress response is activated, adrenaline and cortisol rush through throughout the body causing a tightening and stiffening of the muscles.
