Popular Mantras to Try Yourself

Mantras have been used for thousands of years in yoga and meditation. While your personal mantra can be as simple as a word, phrase or song, there are several common mantras that are practiced uniformly, all of which have their own meanings. We’ve compiled a list of some of the most popular mantras you can try.

Aum

Aum is one of the most popular and universally practiced mantras to date. It is the Hindu syllable of aum, which is pronounced “Om.” This short syllable is believed to be the sound of the creation of the universe. Most yoga classes perform this mantra at the end of class, as a symbol of unity and togetherness.

Gayatri Mantra

The Gayatri mantra is famous because of the Vedic tradition. It is dedicated to the sun right before sunrise, and is believed to hold all of the energy of the entire cosmos in one single chant. The Gayatri is believed to develop a feeling of constantly living in the divine state of pure consciousness.
