What Are the Symptoms of COPD?

Symptoms of COPD won’t show until there has been substantial damage to the lung. The symptoms get worse as the severity of the condition increases.

The first set of symptoms you’ll notice are:

– Shortness of breath
– The need to clear your throat
– Recurrent cough

As the COPD gets worse, the symptoms too worsen and become regular. You’ll notice:

– Your chest tightens
– Lack of energy
– Wheezing
– Repeated flu and respiratory infections
– The need to clear mucus often

With increased severity, the symptoms are:

– Swelling of the feet and ankles
– Fatigue
– Weight loss

When Should You See Your Doctor?

You need immediate medical attention when you have the following symptoms:

– When your heart races
– You cannot walk or catch your breath
– You have bluish or gray fingernails or lips. This is cyanosis, a condition caused when there isn’t enough oxygen supply to your red blood cells.
– When you faint, feel foggy, or have trouble concentrating

Kindly note that the symptoms are worse if you smoke or you’re regularly exposed to secondhand smoke.
