What Are the Causes of Hypertension?

Some common causes of hypertension are heredity, a diet high in salt and unsaturated fat and processed foods. Alcohol abuse, illicit drugs, a side effect of drugs, etc. can also be causes of high blood pressure.

However, there are two types of hypertension, and what causes each can be different.

Primary Hypertension

This condition is also known as essential hypertension. It is a common type of hypertension. The blood pressure increases over time and scientists have not been able to fully understand what causes it. However, they believe the following factors play a part.

Changes in your system – Certain changes in your body can have a cascading effect. For instance, when your kidney functions change due to age, it might throw your fluids and salt level off balance. This can cause your blood pressure to rise.

Lifestyle – Unsurprisingly, how we go about our lives directly affects our state of wellness. A sedentary lifestyle and poor diet can make lead to obesity and weight gain. Stress, alcohol, and drug abuse can also take their toll on the body making it vulnerable to hypertension.

Genetics –  Some people inherited their risk of high blood pressure. For others, it might be a genetic mutation or abnormalities.

Secondary Hypertension

This condition is usually severe and shows up suddenly. Causes can be linked to the following:

– Issues with the thyroid
– Congenital heart defects
– Kidney disease
– Adrenal gland issues
– Abuse of illegal drugs
– Endocrine tumors
– Obstructive sleep apnea
– The side effect of certain medication
